Have you ever thought of decorating your walls with your own hand made sea blue color paint canvas art? Seeing these beautiful paintings makes you feel so happy, right? You would already buy all, but they’re so expensive, and maybe you imagined even more to decorate your home. So why not to try it yourself? Painting can be sometimes easier than drawing as you can make an abstract painting, so than no one can see if you made a mistake. :) Of course famous painters have great artistic skills, they learned drawing before starting to paint one single line or dot, but…let’s just make it easy.

If you feel like creating, don’t let yourself down just because you didn’t study fine arts. You can just try it, there’s nothing to lose, and you’ll see what a fun stuff is trying out different painting techniques, using different objects, get messy, and finally have your own acrylic sea blue color paint on canvas!! And if you’re an artist, well, I’m sure you’ll do a great job. Whatever is your aim, let’s try! You’re gonna need only a canvas, a brush and some paints, nothing else, so you don’t even have to invest a lot of money for your first canvas.

Material list:

Canvas: mine is 30 x 30 cm (17 3/4” x 17 3/4”)
Sea Blue Color Paint, Acrylic:
Hobby Line Matt color, 48 Turquoise
Hobby Line Matt color, 43 Mint Green
Hobby Line Matt color, 67 Bamboo
Watercolor: I used it to mix the acrylic paint…I like to use away the supplies I already have, but if you choose the right color paint you need, you don’t need to mix it, so it’s optional for the ones who like to experiment. :)
White Gesso: Dina Wakley
White Tempera
Paint Brush: no 10

I saw some beautiful paintings in different tones of the sea, so I decided to make one as well. Therefore I chose 3 different tones in sea blue color paint Turquoise, Mint Green and Bamboo. I wanted to have a beige one, but didn’t find from the same brand so I just mixed the Bamboo with some watercolor until I got the color I wanted. See how easy? You don’t need to buy all the colors and the best brand, just play with the colors. :)

First apply your gesso on your canvas. You can also use your tempera if you don’t use gesso generally, it will work as well. We won’t need much texture now so you can use a simple white tempera as a base. Actually this time I didn’t wait until it dries totally. When making background it’s better to wait, so that you can print over it, applying additional layers, but now we’re just simply paint over, so you can even mix it with the paint, basically if you used a white tempera.

Next step. You can either work in sections or mix the colors. Choose which colors you would like to use. Using the brush I applied from the top moving down Bamboo, Mint Green and Turquoise in that order, and then mixed them in pairs to smooth away the edges, so Bamboo with Mint Green, Mint Green with Turquoise. On the bottom I used Bamboo, what I’ll mix with some watercolor later on.

When you have the base, add some color here and there where you feel like. Imagine the waves, the sea is never totally calm. As you add more colors, and more lines with the brush your canvas will become more alive. So don’t be afraid to add more paint.

I added some beige and brown to the bottom of my canvas to paint the sand. Then to have some texture I used my white tempera…

…and painted over with the Turquoise. I also mixed it with some darker blue to have a darker tone. You can either apply the paint in small “wavy” lines to give motion to your painting, or just apply some horizontal lines, as you prefer. Above I only used horizontal lines, and moving down as the waves are closer I applied some random lines to show the motion. Try out different ways, the good thing is you can always paint over if you don’t like it, so don’t be shy, just bravely!

They say, if you’re an artist, or you want to become one, sign your art. One of my favorite stories is from Peter H. Reynolds: The Dot. ( If you’d like to see it, I shared the link below) It’s a really cute story for children, but the concept applies for anyone who needs more courage about how to learn when you think you can’t do something. So even if you don’t feel like an artist, sign it! That’s the first step to become an artist. I’m really happy with the result, so I go and sign mine right now! :)
